Ben Sandilands Triumphs in Paris
Fife AC’s Ben Sandilands has broken a world record in claiming the T20 1500m Para Athletics World Championship title.
The Kirkcaldy teenager took gold in Paris with a time of 3.52.42, breaking his own European record which he set at the Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai in March.
19-year-old Sandilands was in fifth place with just 200 metres to go at the Charlety Stadium, but a late surge saw him take the title from 2016 Paralympic gold medallist Mikey Brannigan of the USA.
Fellow Fife AC Para runners Owen Miller and Stephen Bryce also made the final, finishing behind Sandilands in seventh and 13th place respectively.
All three are coached by Steve Doig at Pitreavie in Dunfermline, who said he was “ecstatic” with the result.
They will be in action again this weekend when they race in the Diamond League in London on Sunday.
